Summer Camp in Review:
We attended Summer Camp from July 23 through July 29 at Camp Easton in Northern Idaho. Upon arriving at camp we were escorted on a four hour tour of the facility which was goofy and not effective at solving the problems it was designed to solve. Next we did our swim tests and then had our first dinner. The food was good and most everything else during the week went really well. For the next five days the boys worked on many Merit Badges and completed 61 in total. We all spent a bunch of time at the waterfront where you could swim, canoe, sail, waterski, kayak, and snorkel. The days were very hot but the boys did really well staying hydrated and using suntan lotion. On Friday we set two war canoes in the lake and paddled for about an hour to Mica Bay. We spent the night there and then woke at 5 a.m. to paddle back to camp for our last breakfast. We then drove to Silverwood and spent ten hours riding roller coasters and other rides. The newest ride was called Tremors and was quite incredible! We stayed until the closing fireworks and then we walked over to the adjacent campground and fell asleep. Our canoe ride across the bay was 18 hours earlier and we were exhausted. Our gear was all packed in our nice new trailer but due to truck problems we had Troop 649 haul it home for us. We are very lucky that they had a vehicle available and thankful for their help. If you haven't picked up your gear yet, the trailer is in the driveway at the Moody's house.

Deadline for Merit Badge Cards:
The Summer Court of Honor will be on Monday, September 11th at the Armory. Merit Badge Blue Cards and Scoutmaster Conferences need to be turned in and completed by Monday, August 28th if you wish to receive the award at the Court of Honor.

2000 - 2001 Year Plan:
During Summer Camp the boys selected Merit Badge Themes for the upcoming Scout Year. During the August Troop Committee Meeting we will review their plan and help to fill in the missing pieces. Here is what we have so far:
September  Citizenship in the World *
October      Railroading
November   Music
December    cut Christmas Trees
January        Personal Management *
February     Cinematography
March         Aviation
April            Family Life *
May            Space Exploration
June            Climbing
July             Hiking / Backpacking
August         Reptile and Amphibian Study

Each month we will go on an overnight campout and possibly visit a location that pertains to our Merit Badge Theme. If you have some good ideas please attend the next Troop Committee Meeting at the Armory on Monday, August 21st at 7 p.m.

Troop Backpacking Trip to Campfire Lake:
We will be taking a backpacking trip into Campfire Lake on Sunday, August 6th. We will be leaving from the Lincoln School on Sunday at 7 a.m. We will camp the night at Campfire Lake and then on Monday move our camp to Moose Lake. We plan to climb a nearby peak and hope to see through the haze. Tuesday, August 8th we will hike out and return to the Lincoln School around 4 p.m. The total trip distance will be greater than 15 miles and will include two different campsites. This trek will meet requirement number 10 as one of the three backpacking trips toward Backpacking Merit Badge.

Venture Trip to Tongue River Cave:
The Venture Crew under the leadership of Venture Crew Chief Daniel, is planning a caving trip to Tongue River Cave in Dayton, Wyoming. The trip will be Saturday, August 26th through Sunday, August 27th with a night of camping at a campground in the Bighorn Mountain of Wyoming. Boys that are 14 years old or older may attend this trip. Interested Scouts should contact Daniel to find out about required equipment. We need one more driver to bring boys and gear to the campground but not necessarily to cave. If you can help, please contact Daniel.

Soil and Water Conservation Merit Badge:
During the month of August we will focus on Soil and Water Conservation Merit Badge. We plan to have a guest speaker during the Troop Committee Meeting on August 21st from the Fly Fishing Federation. Therefore, Scouts should attend this meeting. If Scouts earn this Merit Badge along with Environmental Science and Citizenship in the World, they will receive the World Conservation Award.

Car Wash Fund Raiser:
The August Fund Raiser will be a car wash at Melin Farmers Insurance Agency (1016 West Park) on Saturday, August 19 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The proceeds will be split among the boys based on the number of hours they work. We could use some parents' help. Please bring sponges, car detergent and buckets. There will be two shifts of three hours each. If you wish to sign up or for more information, please contact Mrs. Hughes.

No Troop Committee Minutes:
We did not have a Troop Committee Meeting in July so there are no minutes from that meeting to include with this newsletter.
