Troop Committee Elections:
The Troop Committee is holding its annual elections at the next Troop Committee Meeting on Monday, February 17th. Parents of Scouts that have joined in the past year or so are strongly encouraged to participate in the Troop Committee. As older Scouts turn 18 or become too busy for Boy Scouts, their parents will leave the Troop Committee. The Committee is currently formed of primarily parents of older Scouts. We need to see many parents of newer Scouts to enable some transition time and for them to begin to help continue this great program for their boys. All Committee positions are available including: Committee Chair, Finance Chair, Secretary, Outdoor/Activities Coordinator, Advancement Chair, Board of Review Coordinator, Equipment Coordinator, Tree Sales Chair, Community Service Chair, New Scouts Coordinator, Scout Week Chair, Eagle Ceremony Chair, Historian Chair, Court of Honor Coordinator, Publicity Chair, Newsletter Chair, and Special Event Chair. Please volunteer for one of these positions! Some take a year long commitment and monthly time investments but others have only short term time requirements. In addition we could always use new Assistant Scoutmasters and continue to search for a new Scoutmaster. You can also help by being a Merit Badge Counselor or just come by to help teach a skill or put on a special presentation. The boys will appreciate it and our community will be enhanced by your participation.

Jay's Trip to the International Jamboree:
Jay went to Thailand over winter break where he reports that it was very warm and he stayed busy enjoying the 2003 International Jamboree of Scouting. He will be giving a presentation on his trip at the Monday, February 10th meeting.

May Camporee Planning Committee:
The first meeting of the May Camporee Planning Committee was held on Tuesday, January 28th. Four veteran Scouts, three newer Scouts and four adults attended and started organizing for the May 2 - 4 Camporee. Our Troop is responsible for everything and this event will require everyone in our Troop family to participate. We will set up on Friday, May 2nd and have events all day on Saturday, May 3rd. Departure and clean-up are on Sunday, May 4th. We have agreed on a theme centered around physical activities, team work and chivalry. The camporee will be called Knight Trek and have an "Arthurian Legend" flavor. The next meeting of this committee is Tuesday, February 11th at 6 p.m. in room A-105 of SGMS and will include pizza and drinks.

Adopt-A-Highway Program:
Our Troop is now responsible for cleaning up U.S. Highway 89 South from mile marker 50 to 52 as part of the Adopt-A-Highway program. We will clean up the highway three times a year, spring, summer and fall. We look forward to this new service commitment to our community.

District Winter Camporee 2003 Report:
Our Troop went camping in January at Battle Ridge and took part in the District Winter Camporee. Eight Scouts earned two nights of camping and 16 frost points at the event. We participated in five events including sled pulling, first aid, knots and ropes, fur trapping, and fire building. Four Scouts went skiing at Bridger Bowl for the day, leaving the other four to compete. We did not earn any ribbons at this Camporee but the Scouts did feel that they were successful at most of the competitions. The camporee was well attended for a winter event and was a fun time.

Incentive Program Update:
The only Scout, of 21 Scouts, to complete 15 requirements during the last three months, October, November and December, was Billy with 16 requirements. Jere completed 11 for an honorable mention but not enough for a $25 incentive award. In the six month competition running July through December, Mark earned the most Merit Badges, Michael and Billy had the best meeting attendance, Michael had the best campout attendance, Billy conducted the most number of service hours and Billy won the uniform inspection. Each of these competitions is awarded with a $25 deposit to the Scout's incentive account to be used for camping or camping equipment.

Troop Service Hours:
Our Troop kept better track of service hours last year than in most. All told, we conducted 191.25 hours of service to our community last year. Our goal was 500 so we fell well short of that but still performed many great deeds. Scouts will once again keep track of the hours of service that they perform this year with our goal continuing to be 500 hours. If every Scout does two hours of service every month we should easily make it (2 hours x 21 boys x 12 months = 504 hours). Scouts can obtain more information about how to volunteer in the community at any Scout Meeting. Popular places to help out are the Library, Humane Society, Loaves and Fishes, your church, and the Hospital. The Troop still plans to help with the annual lagoon clean up, Postal Service food drive, fun run, weed pulls, flag raisings, Christmas dinner set-up and our adopt-a-highway section. In addition, we hope there will be a few Eagle Scout Projects that engage the Scouts in lasting service to our community.

Scout Week Window Display:
On Saturday, February 1st, the Scout Week Window Display was assembled. A web page with pictures and more details is now available in the 2003 history section of the Troop web page, if you are on-line just follow this link.
