Livingston, Montana    May 2002    Volume 5    Issue 4

Welcome Matt:
Our newest Scout is Matt. He is an eighth grader that was recruited by Billy. He is a Cub Scout from way back. During his first week of Boy Scouts he completed his Scout Rank, most of his Tenderfoot requirements and participated in the April Campout and bike ride. We hope he enjoys the experiences in our Troop and wish him the best on his trail to Eagle.

April Campout at Jere's:
We met on a snowy Saturday morning and took the bike path out to Jere's house. We put up our tents and enjoyed a bit of sun. It wasn't windy but a bit cool. We worked on many of the Tenderfoot requirements and played a bunch of games. Micah was the kitchen supervisor and completed First Class Requirement 4. We had nine Scouts camp during the evening and our Senior Patrol Leader Daniel came by for the day to see how things were going. In the morning we found out that we earned 6.5 frost points. This gives Jerome 99.5 frost points! It became very nice on Sunday and we biked over to the middle school. There we worked on orienteering skills and started the one mile orienteering course. After a snack, we biked the final leg back to the Lincoln School and ended another fine campout.

Community Service 2002:
We are doing pretty well on our goal of 500 hours of service to our community this year. Each Scout should volunteer for two hours each month at one of the many community minded organizations around town. See the new list Mrs. Lemke created for helpful suggestions as to what and where to help out. There are a number of great service projects ahead for Scouts to be involved in. Hopefully a few Life Scouts will announce dates for their projects too

May Camporee Plan:
We will meet at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Lincoln School. Everyone should bring the outdoor essentials and overnight gear. In addition bring a sack dinner for Friday night or eat before you arrive. We will be bringing the trailer on this trip so you can pack however much stuff as you like. This campout will be another Night Trek as we did in May of 2000. Scouts will head out on a five mile hike at 9:30 p.m. and be back in camp around 3:00 a.m (yes in the middle of the night). At stations all along the hike they will participate in 12 competitions ranging from knot tying and track identification to first aid and orienteering. We will sleep-in late on Saturday and have a relaxed afternoon. Hopefully our Patrols can win a few ribbons for the old Troop flag. Saturday afternoon the 9th and 10th graders will have an opportunity to start and finish Geology Merit Badge as well as the younger Scouts completing Rank Advancement and Merit Badge work. The whole Troop will participate in a service project which will involve landscape work at the Missouri Headwaters State Park. Saturday evening we will have the Order of the Arrow Tap Out Ceremony. We will pack up early Sunday morning and leave after the religious observations. We will be back at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Lincoln School. Scouts should bring $8 to the Monday, May 13th Scout Meeting for the food on this trip. John will be the kitchen supervisor and will need to meet with Mr. Andrews for food shopping. Will Jerome earn the final 0.5 frost point? Will the Dragon Slayers, Cosmos and Raptor/Vipers win any ribbons? Will Billy be tapped-out at the O.A. ceremony? Will the 9th and 10th graders actually finish a merit badge and earn their incentive this quarter? This is certain to be an exciting camporee that no one should miss! Stay tuned for the June newsletter to see how it went.

Troop Election Results:
We currently have 23 Scouts in our Troop and 18 of them were present for our Troop Elections on Monday, May 6th! The Scouts gave short speeches about the positions they were running for and what their plans were. All Scouts that are First Class or Star Ranks need to hold a position of responsibility or do a Scoutmaster approved leadership project to advance to the next rank. The results of our semi-annual election are as follows:
Daniel - Junior Assistant Scoutmaster
Joshua - Senior Patrol Leader
Danny - Assistant Senior Patrol Leader
Jerome - Venture Crew Chief
Jere - Troop Guide
Michael - Dragon Slayer's Patrol Leader
Mark - Assistant Dragon Slayer's Patrol Leader
Jay - Raptor's Patrol Leader
Bret - Assistant Raptor's Patrol Leader

Matt - Assistant Viper's Patrol Leader
Mark - Troop Scribe
Jere - Troop Quartermaster
Bret - Troop Librarian

Congratulations to all the boys! Boys that are new in their positions will need to meet with Joshua for their initial training. Subsequent training will be conducted at the Troop's Junior Leadership training course which we plan to schedule soon.

Summer Camp Update:
We still need one or two more adults to stay at camp this year. Mr. Moody is planning to supervise Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights July 11-14. This leaves Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights, July 6-11. Anyone that can help should contact Mr. Andrews who will be at camp the entire week. We have 14 Scouts attending camp this year including all seven from the Dragon Slayers Patrol. The final payment of $50 is due at the Scout Meeting on Monday, June 3rd. The total fee is $200 and $150 should be paid at this time.
