Welcome New Scout Mike:
Our newest Scout is a brother of Ken who is back in action with the Troop. Mike has been to two Scout meetings so far and says that he has enjoyed them. Mike is a member of the Dragon Slayers Patrol which has a total of four Scouts currently. Please welcome Mike to our Troop when you see him. We all hope he enjoys the time we will spend together camping, working on merit badges, serving our community and becoming strong leaders.

October Board of Review Results:
The Troop held our first Board of Review for this school year on Monday, October 29th. Brian was approved for his second Bronze Eagle Palm officially making him a Silver/Bronze Eagle. Nicholas was approved for his Silver Palm and Jay was approved for his Bronze Palm. Each palm requires five merit badges beyond the 21 required for Eagle, continued service to the Troop and community, and improving leadership skills. In addition to the Eagles, Mark was approved for the Star Scout Rank, which is a big step toward Eagle. As always, thank you to those parents that help out in this important advancement interview which really assists in making our Troop program a strong one.

Fall Court of Honor Postponed:
The four Scouts that recently advanced will receive their awards at the Scout meeting on Monday, November 12th. In addition the three merit badges that have been earned by Brent (Personal Management), Mark (Citizenship in the Community) and Calin (Computers) will be awarded. The certificates for these awards will be held for the next Court of Honor which is postponed until more boys have earned awards.

Membership Fees for 2002 and OA:
Due by December 31st are membership fees for all Scouts and an additional $10 for Scouts in the Order of the Arrow. All Scouts receive Boy's Life magazine as part of this fee. Individual boys must pay $17 and families with two boys, that share a subscription, must pay $25. All money can be paid to Troop 563 together in one check. Please help our Troop keep these membership fees current and make the paperwork flow quickly from one desk to the next.

Venture Caving Trip:
On October 13 the Venture Crew left for Billings to conduct some shopping adventure. We visited book stores, CD and computer stores, office supply stores and outdoor gear stores. We went to Pizza Hut for dinner and then drove the other half of the way to our true destination, Tongue River Cave. We decided to waste no time and went caving from 10 p.m. to 3 in the morning. We did the Dead Bat Crawl the difficult way and then back the easier way which was still very challenging since it was our second time through. We picked up a bunch of trash on the way out as the cave was full of more litter than we remember seeing on previous trips. We put up tents in the dark mist and slept until 9 a.m. We had an uneventful drive home with plenty of time on Sunday for homework and grading. Thanks to Mr. Ron Nelson for driving and supervising the Scouts. Daniel did a great job of organizing this trip and it was enjoyed by the Venture Crew.

Troop Climbing Trip:
On October 27th the Troop departed for Yankee Jim Canyon. We climbed in beautiful weather all day long. A few Scouts now have their 3 rappells, 3 climbs and 6 belays done. We had dinner and played three rounds of capture the flag and topped it off with snacks and cosmic wimpout. This was the Troop's third high adventure trip in a row. Everyone had a great time. Now we can start thinking about some frost points!

November Troop Merit Badge Focus:
During November we will work on Fire Safety Merit Badge. This badge has 11 requirements but they are all fairly easy. We will take a trip to the fire station and learn about the fire fighting equipment. Scouts that still have Space Exploration Merit Badge requirements to finish are encouraged to call Mr. Andrews and set up a time to meet. We will plan one more launch day probably on a Sunday afternoon.
