Year 2001 Troop Budget:
Scouts have developed a recommended budget, with the help of Mrs. Lemke, during a recent Green Bar meeting. This budget utilizes the funds that we earned during our one Troop fund raiser of the year, Christmas Tree sales. We were a little short of our goal this year so we will have to be diligent in staying within our budget. It appears that there will not be any money left at the end of 2001 so this puts an extra burden on next year's tree sales. At the Troop Committee Meeting on Monday, January 15th we will look over the budget. Changes can be made and then the final budget will head to the Green Bar meeting on the 2nd of February for final approval by the Scouts.

Green Bar Meetings:
Brian, the Troop Senior Patrol Leader, has proposed that Green Bar Meetings be held on the first Friday of every month. Unless announced otherwise, these will occur every month of the year at 3:30 p.m. in Sleeping Giant Middle School room A-105, also know as Mr. Andrews' room. There needs to be a representative from the Cosmos, Raptors and Vipers at each of the meetings. It is preferable that these representative are the Patrol Leaders or at least the assistants. Scouts should remember to make any desires or recommendations concerning Troop functions to their Patrol Leader before the Green Bar Meeting so informed decisions can be made. For example: what game to play at the next meeting or a piece of camping gear that the Troop needs. At each Green Bar Meeting, Scouts will review the recent Troop Committee Meeting minutes, plan for the following month's Troop Meetings and plan a time line for the month's overnight outing. These meetings are open to all Scouts to attend and learn from.

2001 Jamboree Trip:
The road trip to the 2001 National Jamboree in Virginia is planned for July 15 to August 4 this summer. The payment plan that has been agreed to is $200 by February 1st, $200 by April 1st, $200 by June 1st and the last payment by July 1st. At this point in time the last payment is $50 which is to be revised once gas prices, van rental and food prices are known more accurately. We plan to have 11 boys and four adults on the trip. All boys should let Mr. Andrews know if they are using their Jamboree fund raising money for the first $200 deposit or give him a check for $200 made out to Troop 563 at the January 29th meeting.

Troop Recharter:
Every January the Troop has to recharter with the Montana National Guard Armory and the Montana BSA Council. The cost for each boy is the same as last year, $17 per boy or $25 for two Scouts from the same family that share a copy of Boy's Life. This fee must be paid by the January 29th meeting.

District Winter Camporee 2001:
The District Winter Camporee this year is being held at the old ski hill in Bear Canyon. This is just off of I-90 on the East side of Bozeman. We plan to leave at 5 p.m. on Friday, January 26th from the Lincoln School. We will return at noon on Sunday, January 28th. The cost of the trip is $11 for food and $3.50 for camporee registration which includes a patch. The Troop is paying for half of the camporee registration which is $7 per person. All Scouts must decide if they will be attending by the January 22nd Scout Meeting. Please bring $14.50 that evening so Mr. Andrews does not have to collect money Friday night. Don't forget to bring very warm clothes and a sack dinner for Friday evening.

Wilderness Survival Merit Badge:
At the District Winter Camporee, Scouts will work on Wilderness Survival Merit Badge which can be completely finished during the weekend. A few prerequisites are recommended by the Camporee Merit Badge Counselor. First, Scouts must have a survival kit, second, Scouts must have read the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge Booklet. Scouts are required to spend the night in a shelter that they have built. Because it is winter, Scouts will build snow caves rather than the typical lean-to built during summer camp. Our Troop has nine boys that can take advantage of this Merit Badge offering during the January 26 - 28 campout.

January Troop Merit Badge Focus:
During the month of January, and then continuing for two more months, Scouts will be keeping track of their finances by recording every penny they earn or spend. In addition, Scouts will learn about different financial accounts, make purchasing goals and price shop. The seven Scouts that have already earned Personal Management Merit Badge will work with the ten Scouts that have not. Each Monday in January, the Scouts will work on three requirements. All that will be left at the end of this month will be continuing to keep track of personal income and expenses for a total of three months.

Incomplete Merit Badge Blue Cards:
There are currently 124 Merit Badges that our 17 Scouts are working on. Some of these were started over a year ago with no progress since. I plan to meet with each Scout before the Board of Review on February 12th to see what can be done to finish outstanding requirements. I also plan to offer a Computer Merit Day for any Scout that is interested in finishing that badge.

Troop Newsletter:
It has been a year since the Troop 563 News first appeared on our web page. Other than my not having a December 2000 newsletter, publishing on the web has been working out very well. If you can access this newsletter from our website then I would like to request that you do so each month and print out your own copy or simply view it when you need to. This will cut down on postage costs for the Troop. I have enclosed a sheet of paper for all recipients of the newsletter to return as soon as possible concerning this request. The Troop Committee Meeting minutes will continue to be sent to you by e-mail or standard mail as you desire.
